The 9th Altar in the Serpentine Field

Duration: 9 minutes 16 seconds
Completion Date: October 2024

Synopsis

The film conjures the Serpentine Field, drawing from the annual pilgrimage of the holy snakes of Mary in Kefalonia and the ancient Mycenaean serpent cult. It unfolds as a divination ritual in which human and non-human participants merge into a collective consciousness—a  technoetic screen-dance of evolution, mutation, and emergence.

The snakes, revered for their healing powers when worn as bracelets, take on an oracular role. Legends speak of their disappearance during times of war and ecological crisis, offering enigmatic warnings from deep nature to human culture.

The 9th Altar is a site where elemental forces and serpentine life forms evolve eyes and consciousness. Silently, a woman passes by and kneels with jars of offerings, arriving from nowhere and vanishing like mist—a serpent embracing a stone in a timeless gesture.

Artist Statement

The 9th Altar in the Serpentine Field is the culmination of a nine-year exploration into artwork as a prototype field of human and more-than-human consciousness. Created within a technoetic context, the film approaches techne—technology—as intrinsically woven with direct noetic experience and encounter.

The work emerged through a long-term engagement with both physical and virtual environments. This included immersion in the annual pilgrimage of the Holy Snakes of Mary and the ancient Mycenaean landscapes of Kefalonia, as well as the development of online rituals rooted in the concepts of Networked Rites and Noetic Fields Weaving. These concepts were elaborated in video manifestos, artworks and academic articles. In its final year (2024), the artist filmed, gathered and edited footage of subterranean cave interiors to form an imaginal altar within the evolving field. It culminated in a performative offering by the artist.

The film’s choreography and editing are informed by the artist’s aesthetic sensibility of choreography for the camera and the screen (screen-dance). Yet, within this work, both “camera” and “screen” are no longer static concepts—they become evolving instruments. The film transforms into a field that grows its own cameraless eyes, envisioned as streaming beyond the physical locality of the screen to resonate, expand, and mutate across imaginal and tecnhospiritual terrain.
