​During the 2012 solar eclipse, the world held its breath in anticipation. The eclipse coincided with the end of the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar, a date widely associated with prophecy, transformation, and the possibility of an end or a new beginning. Interpretations varied dramatically. Some anticipated that the world would fall into complete darkness for three days, while others predicted catastrophe or spiritual awakening. Many simply wondered what, if anything, would change. Beneath these expectations lay collective hopes, fears, and unconscious responses awakened by the shadow of the Moon.

Random Networked Rites in the Eclipse Field explores the possibility that such collective states of consciousness may leave traces within a shared field. Drawing inspiration from data gathered by the Global Consciousness Project's Random Event Generators (REGs), the work presents visualisations of field traces recorded during previous eclipses, including the pivotal eclipse of 2012. These traces appear reflected upon the Moon and circulating around the Earth as technoetic manifestations of collective awareness.

In the field visualisations presented here, significant peaks and troughs represent deviations from expected random behaviour. Such deviations have been interpreted as possible traces of collective attention and participation during major events.

This networked rite invites participants to enter the Eclipse Field and contribute their own eclipse experience to an emerging collective field. At its centre is a contemplative interface where visitors are invited to reflect upon the depth, intensity, and significance of an eclipse experience, whether remembered or unfolding in the present moment. Participants then enter a number from 0 to 10 representing the intensity of that experience. Data collected from all entries will be used to generate a living graph of collective participation associated with the August 2026 eclipse. The graph will fluctuate throughout the duration of the work in response to participant contributions.

Each contribution becomes part of an evolving field generated during and after the August 2026 eclipse. As individual responses accumulate, they form a collective trace of planetary participation, creating a networked rite shared across nonlocal time, place, and experience.

The project also aims to incorporate REG data recorded during the August 2026 eclipse, bringing together participant contributions and global eclipse field traces.

The resulting field will be archived by Moonfiles as part of an ongoing lunar repository of eclipse consciousness, preserving a record of humanity's participation in one of nature's awe-inspiring celestial events.
